Our team of over 300 volunteers provides invaluable support to patients and staff across several Moorfields sites throughout London. They also gain valuable experience, make new friends and learn more about careers in the NHS and in eye health.
We are looking for volunteers in the following roles:
Welcoming and guiding patients
Our volunteers are often the first people patients see - greeting them at the entrance, directing them to their destinations and guiding them if needed. Volunteers are also on hand throughout the hospital to offer guidance and support.

The Health Information Hub
Our Health Information Hub is the first port of call for patients and their families who want to learn more about eye health, support services, and next steps after a diagnosis. Supported by our staff, volunteers signpost patients to the right information for their individual needs.

Wards and Theatre support
Patients who come to Moorfields are often anxious about their eye health, or worried about undergoing procedures under local anaesthetic. Volunteers trained to offer emotional support to patients can sit with them, talk to them, or accompany them into theatre to hold their hand for reassurance.

Clinic Support
At clinics, volunteers help with queue management, chat with patients in the waiting area and take them to their appointments. If a patient needs extra support, a volunteer might stay with them throughout their visit to ensure they have everything they need. Afterwards, they help patients complete feedback on their care.

Pharmacy support
Pharmacy volunteers do everything from greeting and directing patients to operating the phone triage helpline and packing eye drops for dispensing.

The Friends Shop and Trolley Service
Our well-stocked shop is staffed by volunteers, providing a convenient service for patients and staff as well as raising funds. Volunteers also operate our trolley, bringing snacks and drinks to other locations throughout the hospital.

Face-to-face fundraising
Our volunteers collect funds in the hospital, at nearby Tube stations and other locations, raising awareness of our vital work as well as money so that we can continue to do it.

Phone support
Our volunteers, some of whom are home-based, call patients ahead of time to remind them about their appointments and make sure they have all the information they need.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming one of our volunteers, get in touch and let us know – one of our Volunteer Support Officers will get back to you to explain everything in a bit more detail and answer any questions you may have.
