Friends forges winning partnership with local school

Friends of Moorfields is delighted to announce a partnership with The Central Foundation Boys’ School which should see over 40 sixth form students being able to take party in weekly volunteering.

Long tradition of community service

Like our hospital, the Central Foundation Boys School have both served the local community for over 150 years and has a long tradition of community service.

Our first group of 15 students have already started volunteering in several different roles, all of which will help them build a strong portfolio of professional and personal skills that will serve them well for life beyond school.

Building skillsets

Quite a few of the students have already set their sights on educational and career pathways in health professions, so by volunteering with us will provide invaluable real-world experience. 

But whatever their future aspirations they may be, we are delighted to welcome the students as they give back to the community and develop an understanding of altruism. They are also demonstrating to all they meet, the Moorfields values of kindness and excellent care.

We spoke to two of these students, pictured here with Friends Volunteer Support Officer Robert Kwami. Michele “Micky” is interested in pursuing a career in pharmacology and he finds volunteering here an opportunity to understand how hospitals operate in general; and gain experience of working in a hospital environment.

Aqifa is trying to decide whether to apply to study law or medicine and sees volunteering at Moorfields as helping her plan her future career, as well as strengthen her university application.

These students volunteer for one afternoon each week, and will also be offered the opportunity to observe clinics and other teams working at Moorfields.

“This partnership is a great opportunity to bring young volunteers on site to support staff and patients, as well as giving them a chance to learn new skills and gain experience that will help them decide on future careers.

MEH Staff have been very welcoming and supportive of this partnership, with some Consultants allowing the students to shadow them in clinics to experience patient care first-hand.
