Patient phone support
25th March, 2021
The Friends of Moorfields is offering a new service to reassure patients over their outpatient and surgery appointments at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Our volunteers support the team that are booking appointments by calling patients, listening to their concerns over their trip to Moorfields and explaining the measures in place to make the hospital environment safer.
Teams at Moorfields have found that many patients are reluctant to accept the treatment being offered to them, even though delaying their care may risk deterioration in their eyesight. Our volunteers have been trained to help patients understand how we have changed our hospitals since the
onset of Covid and explain the new measures, such as symptom checks, face masks, increased provision for hand hygiene, one way systems, Perspex screens and enhanced cleaning and social distancing. They also help guide patients to their clinics inside our buildings when people come in for their appointments.
Nick Strouthidis, medical director, said “We understand how hard it is for many patients to decide whether to come in for treatment in the current climate. We have set up a wide range of video and phone appointments, to limit the amount of travel for patients, but sometimes we need to see you face to face. If we contact you, we would urge you not to delay your treatment, and our volunteers from the Friends of Moorfields can help you understand how we have changed our services in response to Covid.”
