Volunteer Spotlight: Connecting with people
13th August, 2024
Krystyna talks about how volunteers can help provide the emotional and practical support patients need during their visits to Moorfields.
I have been a volunteer at Moorfields for almost two years. I have also been a patient at Moorfields for many years. I have had some fantastic doctors and, thanks to their care, I still have good eyesight. I started volunteering because I wanted to repay in some small way my debt of gratitude.
I do marshalling once a week at Moorfields City Road and help, direct and chat to patients. I may need to take them to the various departments, escort them in the lift or even press the button to the right floor as some may not be able to see, need extra help or just find the experience stressful. They sometimes share their concerns with me and I can provide reassurance based on my own experience.

I enjoy meeting the huge variety of people of different ages, backgrounds and cultures who come through the doors. I speak Polish and Spanish so sometimes I can strike a rapport straight away by speaking their language.
I love the friendly and supportive atmosphere in the hospital and I want to share it with the patients. Many are very grateful for the help – knowing that I have made a difference to them is a very satisfying experience.
