Hemangi, who joined us as a volunteer last year, talks about how her role at Moorfields at Ealing allows her to build a variety of skills and meet a wide range of people.
I have been volunteering for almost a year now. I’m based in the reception area at Moorfields Eye Centre at Ealing Hospital, where I welcome patients and support staff as needed.
I got involved with Friends of Moorfields because a friend suggested that I apply as a volunteer, and told me that it would be a great way to meet new people. I was drawn to this role because of the opportunity it offers to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and contribute positively to the community, while also gaining valuable experience.
An average day for me might include welcoming patients at the reception area, providing them with information, guiding them to their appointments, and offering assistance with any queries they may have. Additionally, I might help with administrative tasks, or provide comfort and companionship to patients waiting for their appointments. Overall, the role is varied and dynamic, allowing me to engage with different tasks and contribute positively to the hospital.

What I enjoy most about volunteering is the sense of fulfilment I get from making a positive impact on the lives of others. Being able to help patients, provide support to hospital staff, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community brings me a great sense of satisfaction. Additionally, I appreciate the opportunity to meet and interact with diverse individuals, learning from their experiences and building meaningful connections along the way.
Volunteering with Friends of Moorfields has definitely helped me develop and refine various skills. I’ve honed my communication abilities through interactions with patients and staff, improved my organisational skills by assisting with administrative tasks, and enhanced my empathy and patience through supporting individuals during their hospital visits. Additionally, volunteering has taught me the importance of adaptability and problem solving, as I’ve encountered various situations that required quick thinking and flexibility. Overall, the experience has not only helped me develop practical skills but has also deepened my self-awareness and understanding of my strengths and areas for growth.
