Volunteers recognised at Moorfields awards ceremony
26th September, 2024
Three Friends volunteers were shortlisted for the Volunteer of the Year accolade at this year’s Moorfields Stars awards.
The annual Moorfields Stars ceremony recognises and celebrates the achievements of staff and volunteers throughout Moorfields. This year, among many nominations, three volunteers were shortlisted for the Volunteer of the Year award, and attended the ceremony which took place on Wednesday 25 September.
David Bright volunteers at Moorfields City Road, supporting patients as they arrive at the hospital and helping ensure that they find their way to their clinics, and anything else they may need during their visit. “It’s an honour,” said David, as nominees arrived at the ceremony. “I’m overwhelmed to be nominated.”
Brenda Marsh volunteers as a handholder, giving emotional support to patients before and during procedures, as well as giving training and support to new handholders, and knitting items to sell in the Friends shop. “It’s amazing to be here,” said Brenda.

Shyma Suneal volunteers in the Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS) office, supporting the team there with a variety of tasks to help the work of PALS go as smoothly and as quickly as possible, helping ensure that patients have the best possible experience. “I appreciate being nominated,” said Shyma, “and I’m having a lovely time meeting new faces from around the hospital!”

“We’re incredibly proud of David, Brenda and Shyma,” said Volunteer Service Manager Natalia Tomashpolskaya. “Between the three of them, they represent the range of support that we provide to patients throughout their visits to Moorfields – from the moment they arrive, right through their appointments and beyond.”
The winner of the 2024 Volunteer of the Year award was Brenda Marsh. “It’s lovely to be nominated for something you really enjoy doing,” she said. Congratulations to Brenda, and to David and Shyma, and a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, who all work incredibly hard to support patients and staff at Moorfields.
